When Innkeepers Sneak Away

In celebration of Steph’s completion of a grueling two-year masters program to be an NP (on top of full-time work, inn help, parenting, and other illness challenges in the family), we’re celebrating with our own Pure Michigan fall getaway. Where do innkeepers go?

There is nothing like Northern Michigan for a color tour, so we thought we’d explore a bit, and try one of the B&Bs from our Michigan Bed and Breakfast Association that we’d not yet visited. It’s a vital part of our business to learn from others in our group, see best practices and learn, but as our guests know, you can generally find an experience that four regular walls couldn’t come close to touching—and that’s exactly what we found. We landed at The Glen Arbor Bed and Breakfast, and what a treat it was.

A lovely view of Harbor Springs, where Steve’s great grandparents ran an inn a century earlier.

This classic inn just a short stroll from Lake Michigan—and an extraordinary view of Little and Big Manitou Islands—far exceeded our expectations. We booked it last-minute for a late-season color tour and it’s charm, location, and vibe blew us away. How could you not be big fans of the cottage feel of the world-class Northern Michigan areas, and this place is as authentic, clean, well-run, and centrally located as it gets–right by Sleeping Bear National Park, wine tasting country, and some of the greatest color tour routes around. The staff is amazing. Truly the real deal.

As many of our guests do, we combined the trip with visiting a family member: our oldest lives in Traverse City, and we got to spend quality time and do some wine tasting with her, which was a real treat.

Hat’s off to Stephanie for her amazing accomplishment. Selfishly, she says she gets her life back, and I say that I get my wife back. Best of all, she has a few more weeks off between her decade of work in oncology, and her new career with a hospitalist group a Bronson. That means we’ll see more of her at the inn again, which makes us both so happy. Thanks to all who have asked about her, supported her, and reached out for the last couple years. We can’t wait to see you at the inn (right after a couple more wine tastings). Cheers!
